Physical Education
“Winning is important…but just as important are the values of excellence, friendship and respect.” – Mr C. Kunalan
Our Belief
We believe that every AIzen has the potential to lead an active and fulfilling life. It is our belief that all students should be empowered to Participate in Lifelong Activities for Youth (PLAY) - developing the habits, skills, and love for physical activity that will sustain them well beyond their school years. We are committed to nurturing students who are not only physically competent but also resilient, empathetic, and adaptable, with the character and heart to uplift those around them. Through a growth-oriented and inclusive learning environment, we inspire students to discover the joy of movement, find the courage to embrace new challenges, and become advocates for active and healthy living in their communities. In doing so, we hope every student leaves the school not just as a capable mover, but as a lifelong champion of their own wellbeing.
Our Approach
Physical Education seeks to develop the whole child to bring about a nation of physically competent and confident individuals who enjoy a lifetime of active and healthy living safely and responsibly.
PE Goals:
Movement Competence forms the foundation by ensuring students develop the physical skills and confidence needed to participate in various activities.
Healthy Lifestyle Practices extends learning beyond the PE lesson into daily life, covering physical activity, nutrition, sleep, outdoor time and hygiene habits.
Safety Mindset develops critical thinking skills for risk assessment that students can apply both in PE activities and their daily lives.
Core Values integrates character development, helping students make responsible decisions in their behaviour and social interactions.
Enjoyment ensures sustainability by fostering a genuine appreciation for physical activity and healthy living that will continue beyond their school years.
The PE department adopts a holistic and student-centred approach to teaching and learning, drawing on multiple established pedagogical frameworks to cater to the diverse needs of our students. We incorporate the models such as Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU), Games Concept Approach (GCA) to develop students' tactical awareness and decision-making through game-based learning, helping them understand not just the "how" but the "why" behind movement and play. The Sport Education Model is also used to give students authentic sporting experiences, where they take on roles such as players, coaches, and officials, fostering a sense of ownership, responsibility, and teamwork.
Underpinning our approach is MOE's PE syllabus framework, which ensures that our curriculum is aligned with national standards and covers the key learning areas of physical health and fitness, games and sports, gymnastics, dance, and outdoor education. We place strong emphasis on developing students' physical literacy - the motivation, confidence, physical competence, and knowledge to value and take responsibility for their own physical activity throughout life.
Our lessons are designed to be inclusive and progressive, building on students' prior knowledge and skills as they move through the secondary school years. We also intentionally weave in the school values of Adaptability, Courage, and Empathy — encouraging students to adapt to new challenges, show courage in trying new activities, and demonstrate empathy and sportsmanship towards their peers.
Our Stretch Opportunities
Outdoor Learning Experience (OLE)
Our annual cohort camps (otherwise known as OLE) are a highlight of the PE programme, offering students an immersive outdoor education experience beyond the classroom. Designed progressively across the secondary levels, OLE challenges students to step out of their comfort zones, develop resilience, and work collaboratively with their peers. Through activities such as team-building challenges, orienteering, and adventure-based learning, students embody the school's values of Adaptability and Courage while forging stronger bonds with their classmates and teachers.
Inter-Class Games
Inter-Class Games provide students with the opportunity to represent their class and compete in a range of sports in a fun and inclusive setting. More than just a competition, Inter-Class Games foster school spirit, sportsmanship, and a sense of belonging. Students learn to lead with empathy, support one another, and demonstrate graciousness in both victory and defeat, reflecting the school's mission to develop leaders with heart.
Sports Carnival
The annual Sports Carnival is a celebration of active living and school community, open to all students regardless of ability or experience. Featuring a wide variety of sports and recreational activities, the carnival encourages mass participation and reinforces the department's belief in lifelong physical activity. It is also an opportunity for students to try new sports, discover new interests, and inspire one another to stay active while living out the spirit of PLAY.
